More and more industries adopt international quality standards for their manufacturing processes and services offerings. In an effort to apply international quality standards, the translation and interpreting profession has already been using ISO standards, such as ISO 9001, in order to meet client requirements while also adhering to industry and language standards.
There is currently a new ISO Standard specifically for the interpreting industry in development. This new standard, ISO 20228, will serve professional associations as a reference document in their interactions with ministries of justice, judicial stakeholders and fellow legal interpreters. Trainers of legal interpreters will be able to use the standard as guidance for their educational and research activities. Legal interpreters will use the standard to measure their own performance and to fill any gaps in their qualifications, which they might identify.
