“Wer rastet, der rostet,” goes a common German saying, which translates to “those who rest, are rusting.”
Heeding this advice is not only good for the brain, but also makes sense professionally. After all, in order to keep my status as a certified translator, I am required to pursue continuing education, i.e. participate in a certain number of professional education activities. That is what I did last week, by attending the three-day annual conference of our trade association, the American Translators Association (ATA).
The conference is always a highlight among translators. After all, we usually work by ourselves in the “confinements” of our offices/homes. And in a sense, during those three days we can make up for an entire year of missed conversations by the water cooler. But annual gathering of several thousands translators from all over the world is more than just a gigantic social event. Most of all, it is an opportunity to learn, sharpen your skills, and network to your heart’s content. This year was especially worth attending, because there were several presentations and discussions on German translation issues. Picture about 30 attendees, for instance, in one room discussing German pronouns… and having fun doing so!
